Short communication: Driftwood provides reliable chronological markers in Arctic coastal deposits

Abstract. Originating from the boreal forest and often transported over large distances, driftwood characterizes many Arctic coastlines. Here we present a combined assessment of radiocarbon (14C) dendrochronological (ring width) age estimates samples to constrain progradation two Holocene beach-ridge systems near Lena Delta in Siberian (Laptev Sea). Our data show that 14C ages obtained on syndepositional beach deposits yield surprisingly coherent chronologies for coastal evolution field sites. The analysis wood modern drift lines revealed origin recent delivery River catchment. This finding suggests duration transport lies within uncertainty state-of-the-art dating thus substantiates validity indication driftwood. observation will help us better understand response similar past climate sea-level changes.
